Kerala High Court mediation fails, nurses to go on mass leave

CM Pinarayi VIjayan is expected to hold a meeting with nurses on Thursday.

Kochi: Nurses in private hospitals in Kerala announced they will go on leave en masse on Thursday after mediation talks held at Kerala High Court failed. With the decision, only one third of nurses will be working in the state.

A mediation panel, appointed by the HC, held talks with representatives of hospital managements and nurses' associations. However, the nurses stood firm on their demand for Rs 20,000 as minimum salary, which the managements disagreed. Government had suggested Rs 17,200 as minimum wage. However, nurses reiterated that they should be paid Rs 20,000, the amount fixed by a SC-appointed panel. CM Pinarayi VIjayan is expected to hold a meeting with nurses on Thursday.
