Hyderabad: Patients moved from leaking second floor of Old Osmania General Hospital

The doctors have repeatedly urged that a new building must be constructed but there is no positive reply from the government.

Hyderabad: Damage to the old Osmania General Hospital continues as rain water seeps into the building. The second floor of the old building has been completely vacated.

The heavy rains in the last two days has had the government doctors and administration checking on the leakages as there are more than 1,000 in-patients being treated on the first floor.

A senior doctor explained, “Although we have completely shut the second floor, the first floor has been occupied to its double capacity. There are a lot of patients in the building and it is dangerous for all of us. The government must seriously pay attention to the state of the building in OGH.”

The doctors have repeatedly urged that a new building must be constructed but there is no positive reply from the government.

Another senior doctor said, “All our representations from the last three years have only met with the reply that they are considering. While they are constructing new hospital buildings in districts but there are no proper doctors to treat patients. They are then sent back to OGH where the load is forever increasing. We have more than 200 senior doctors in the hospital and there is a strong need to pay attention to this hospital and build its infrastructure.”

At present, the five departments from the old building have been adjusted in other buildings inside the campus but there is a major space crunch being felt. The medical and surgical department has shifted 70 of its beds to Petlaburj Maternity Hospital from OGH. The female patients of these two departments are being attended on out-patient basis but the in-patients are not being admitted.

The doctors said they require nursing staff to take care of these patients and the current staff is not trained for the care of these two departments. The logistics in terms of new appointments for Petlaburj departments has to be carried out and till that is done, operating from there will be difficult.

Meanwhile, the doctors and administration have taken pictures of the present situation and sent it to the government once again urging them to look into the condition of OGH.
