Few takers for BTech this year in Kerala

The CEE had published a rank of colleges for each branch by the last rank allotted.

Thiruvananthapuram: Many private self-financing engineering colleges in the state have only 10 to 15 students after the second round of admissions to government quota for B Tech courses conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE).

The third round of allotment scheduled to be published on Thursday would be the last in this category. After that, it will be restricted to government and aided colleges and government-controlled self-financing institutions.

Sunil Thomas Thonikuzhiyil, Principal of College of Engineering, Attingal told Deccan Chronicle that the statistics proved nearly 50 of the over 160 colleges would have a reasonable number of students to sustain.

After the second round many colleges had students only in single figures for some batches. The total number after the second round was between 10 and 30 percent, Mr Thonikuzhiyil said.

There is also a lack of quality of students admitted. This can be understood by a simple statistics, the lowest ranked student after the first round of allotment for computer engineering at College of Engineering, Trivandrum, was 181. However, in many branches in many self-financing colleges, those who got admissions to CE were ranked as low as 50,000. “The chances of them passing out are very remote,” he said.
