University of Hyderabad now to get site for protests
Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad will soon have designated protest sites – just like a system that’s prevalent abroad.
The Executive Council of UoH decided in its 169th meeting to have designated areas for protests on campus. “It was resolved to constitute a committee with the Dean, Students’ Welfare body and a member of the Executive Council to identify one or two areas on the campus for staging protests/demonstrations, etc. in a democratic manner, minutes of the meeting of the EC uploaded online on Tuesday, revealed.
Since January, protests over the suicide of Dalit PhD scholar Rohith Vemula, have been ongoing at the north shopping complex on the campus. The current protest site is close to the main administration building. The university had earlier raised objections to the area being used as a protest site. The tents were removed by the university’s security.
The EC has also decided to take disciplinary action against those blocking entry into the university campus or into buildings inside the campus.
