AAP continues to be evasive on Sidhu joining party

Party sources however maintain that Sidhu and his wife will join AAP within next week.

New Delhi: The AAP on Wednesday continued to be evasive on when Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife Navjot Kaur would join the party even as it clarified that no two family members can be office-bearers or contest polls at the same time.

When asked, AAP's senior spokesperson Ashutosh praised Sidhu, saying he has always been a "fan" of the cricketer-turned-politician. "But how can I reply on his behalf."

"I have been his fan and he has redefined commentary. In politics, he defeated a heavyweight and was elected to the Lok Sabha," Ashutosh said.

Pressed further, he added that according to the party constitution, two members of the same family cannot be office bearers or contest polls.

While party sources maintain that Sidhu and his wife will join within next week, they indicated that he may not be the CM face but could be the main campaigner in the Punjab Assembly elections next year.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has praised Sidhu's decision to quit from Rajya Sabha although he suggested that talks of him becoming the face of AAP in Punjab would be premature.

Meanwhile, AAP also attacked the Centre latching on to a CAG draft report which contradicted the Narendra Modi government's claim of saving Rs 22,000 crore in LPG subsidy.

"We demand an apology from the Prime Minister's office and the BJP for trumpeting such lies and fabrications," he said.

The party also warned of intensified agitation over the assault on Dalits at Gujarat. Ashutosh will reach there tomorrow while Kejriwal will be there on Friday.

"The dalits were beaten for three hours and police was a party to it. It happened right in front of the police station.

AAP supported the strike that happened across Gujarat today. Many dalits have tried to self-immolate and one has even died. This exposes BJP's anti-dalit and anti-women nature," Ashutosh said.
