Police Raid Houses of Corrupt Officers, Recover Documents

Vijayawada: Six special teams of the state police carried out simultaneous search operations on the properties of some officials of the commercial tax department here on Tuesday.

The accused were B. Meher Kumar, K. Sandhya, K.V. Chalapathi, M. Satyanarayana and K. Rama Suryanarayana. Some of these officials had already been arrested and the others are at large.

The police teams found documents pertaining to assets they made in illegal ways like bribe-taking, including cash, gold, silver ornaments, laptops, mobile phones etc. The raid also helped locate some files that had gone missing from the commercial tax department.

The raids would continue on Wednesday to locate the ill-gotten properties of these officials, as also missing files. The recovered documents and records of properties would be produced in the court.

Based on a complaint lodged by the commercial tax deputy commissioner on May 30, about bribe-taking and other irregularities of some officials, the raids had commenced.

The officials allegedly colluded with dealers and traders and resorted to abuse of their office, creation of false records and caused disappearance of files, made as per norms of AP GST Act, 2017. They caused revenue loss to the state exchequer and made personal gains, as per the case.

The police booked a case against the officials on June 20. Vijayawada police commissioner KR Tata asked DCP Vishal Gunnni to supervise the inquiry and organise the raids.
