Chikkamagaluru: Tragedy struck at Kadur taluk in Chikkamagaluru on Tuesday when a fuel-laden truck caught fire after it toppled over while negotiating a curve at Giriyapura.

The truck driver sustained serious burn injuries, while the cleaner is missing and feared killed.

The resulting blaze engulfed the truck and soon spread to about 100 metres, leaving two houses gutted and reduced three two-wheelers to ashes.

The police said they are yet to confirm the whereabouts of the cleaner, while the injured driver, Dad Pir (45) has been shifted to a hospital in Shivamogga.

The truck belonged to Bharat Petroleum and was on its way to Hosdurga from Kadur when the accident happened. Fire force personnel from Bhadravathi, Shivamogga, Channagiri, Kadur and Chikkamagaluru stations were pressed to service.

Chikkamagaluru Deputy Commissioner Sreerangaiah and other officials visited the spot. The gutted houses belonged to Gurushantappa and Mrutunjayappa.  Bharat Petroleum officials  later carried out an assessment of the losses sustained by the two house owners.
