BBMP to levy high parking fee on 86 roads

BBMP is planning to charge a higher fee than BMRCL. Now, BMRCL charges Rs 30 for two-wheelers for a day, from 5.30 am to 11.30 pm.

Bengaluru: The BBMP has decided to levy the parking fee on 86 roads in the city, and it will be higher than that charged by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation.

A BBMP official, who wished not to be identified, told Deccan Chronicle that the move is to divert vehicles to Metro Rail parking lots. He said that though the Metro Rail has built multi-level parking lots, people preferred parking vehicles on roads. Also, the companies that have developed these parking lots or have taken them on contract too are suffering losses because of lesser number of vehicles using these facilities.

“If parking fee is made mandatory on these roads, people will be forced to park their vehicles in BMRCL parking areas as the BBMP is planning to charge a higher fee than BMRCL. Now, BMRCL charges Rs 30 for two-wheelers for a day, from 5.30 am to 11.30 pm,” he said.

Mr U.A. Vasanth Rao. General Manager, Finance and Taxation, BMRCL, said, “Commuters who park on roads will end up paying higher charges in future than the that charged by us. We expect our spaces to be utilised better.”
