Telangana: Distribution of sheep starts today

Over 7.18 lakh beneficiaries have enrolled for the scheme aimed at reviving the rural economy by encouraging caste-based occupations.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao will launch sheep distribution scheme for Yadav / Kuruma families in the state at Kondapaka village in Gajwel on Tuesday.

Over 7.18 lakh beneficiaries have enrolled for the scheme aimed at reviving the rural economy by encouraging caste-based occupations.

This year, the government will distribute sheep to 3.6 lakh beneficiaries by way of draw of lots. The remaining aspirants will be covered next year.

Each unit to be distributed to each beneficiary will have 20 sheep and one ram and costs Rs 1.25 lakh, of which 75 per cent will be given by the government as subsidy.

The sheep-rearer will have to put in the remaining 25 per cent for which the government will provide bank-linked financial assistance, in case the beneficiaries cannot afford the money.

Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav told reporters on Monday, “The government is spending Rs 5,000 crore in two years to purchase over 80 lakh sheep for distribution. This is the first-of-its-kind scheme. We request all political parties to actively take part in the launch programme.”
