Chennai: Careless youth loses life in freak bus-lorry mishap
Chennai: A 22-year old youth, who was asleep with his head hanging out of a state government bus on the highway near Mamandur, was killed when the bus brushed against a lorry and his head got knocked in the process, early on Sunday morning.
Police identified the deceased as Socrates, a native of Thittakudi who had been living in Vyasarpadi. He was seated near the window in the last row of the bus along with his elder brother and another friend.
The bus, while overtaking a lorry on the right side, brushed against it at around 1.45 am on Sunday. “First the rear view mirror on the left side of the bus was damaged and in no time Socrates’ head also dashed against the lorry. He died on the spot from head injury,” the police said.
The bus was carrying around 40 passengers at the time of the incident. A case has been registered at the Padalam police station. Socrates was a welder, a profession he opted for after discontinuing his studies. He had been residing in his uncle’s house in Vyasarpadi for a few days.
Socrates, his brother and friend were travelling from the Koyambedu bus terminus at around 11 pm to their hometown after they received a call from native village saying that his grandmother was not well.
