Police drive to check accidents in Kozhikode

From 2007 to 2019, the city has witnessed 17,181 accidents in which 1,951 people were killed and 1,843 injured.

Kozhikode: Alarmed by the increasing traffic accidents in the city, the city police will launch a special drive to reduce them from Monday onwards.

Stringent action will be taken against erring drivers under the drive planned by city police commissioner A.V. George. All the policemen in the city will participate in the drive at some point of time every day, the commissioner said in a statement.

The focus would be to check speeding, triple riding, drunken driving, driving carelessly posing a threat to pedestrians at zebra crossings, overtaking from left, using mobile phones while driving, riding two-wheelers sans helmets, buses refusing to stop at stops, vehicles without number plates, with fancy number plates and sun film stickers.

The erring vehicles would be seized and hefty fines would be slapped against the owner and driver. The police also urged citizens to alert the police on toll-free number 1090 or WhatsApp number of city traffic enforcement unit-- 6238488686.

The traffic would be under the watch of police personnel in plainclothes for spotting and tracking of the offenders.
