Chennai: Aravind’s parody of ‘Lungi Dance’ goes viral

Within two days of releasing the song on his twitter handle, nearly eight lakh persons viewed it and the number keeps growing.

CHENNAI: A famous standup comedian Aravind SA’s revenge song for “Lungi Dance”, which was featured in 2013 Bollywood film, ‘Chennai Express’, has gone viral in the social media and superstar Rajinikanth fans love the ‘Lungi Parody’.

Within two days of releasing the song on his twitter handle, nearly eight lakh persons viewed it and the number keeps growing. While introducing the song, Aravind says, “it’s been one year since I released the video on ‘lungi dance’ and lot of outrage happened over it. I do not even hate the ‘lungi dance’ that much. I only hate them calling it a tribute. Had they called it a parody of things of Rajinikanth, probably I would be okay with it. I still call it a bad song, which is another matter. Which is why to mark the one year anniversary of my ‘lungi dance’ video, I thought I will pen a parody song of the lungi dance”.

“Lungi Dance” was composed and sung by rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh for the soundtrack of the 2013 Bollywood film ‘Chennai Express’. The soundtrack was branded as a tribute to Rajinikanth. The ‘Lungi Dance’ received mixed reactions from critics. Rajni fans had not appreciated the song for the stereotyping it had.

About a year ago, standup comedian Aravind SA released a video about the ‘Lungi Dance’. This was reportedly met with abuse and hatred from North Indians. Aravind decided to send a message across saying that stereotyping is not right. Hence, he made a parody song - “Chapathi song” and released it on his twitter handle on Saturday. Within a day, the video went viral in the social media and nearly eight lakh people watched it till Sunday evening.

While introducing the song in his video Aravind says, “to all the people who made a tribute to Rajinikanth in the name of Lungi Dance, here is my special dedication to you - #ChapathiSong, With much love and stereotyping. Jai Hind”.

The video starts with a disclaimer stating that it expected to evoke the following reactions - laughter, happiness, special reactions between North Indians and South Indians, special love between North Indians and South Indians and in some exceptional circumstances it may lead to symptoms hate, anger, strong temptations to call the makers of this video as anti-national.

In the main song Aravind takes a dig at many things from ‘butter naan’ to Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan to Shah Rukh Khan. He also warns that “don’t take Thalaivar’s name in vein”.

Aravind performed the song in special show - ‘Madras Da’ and the crowd in the huge auditorium went gaga as soon he started singing the song -Chapathi. The young audiences cheered him till the end of the four-minute song, which has lines in Tamil, English and Hindi.

On seeing this song large number of people especially Rajini fans shared the links in their twitter handle with reactions and comments. One Rajini fan said all the Rajini fansssss uh, don’t missss uh the chanceeee “!!!Ultimate Thala. Another said, #ChapathiSong started my day with laughter..This song shows your crazy level and also gaandu level towards them. Another posted a comment saying ‘Thalaivareay thooki veichu senjuttan’.
