State safest for minorities: CM Pinarayi Vijayan

The government had spent Rs 91 crore for the welfare of minority communities.

KOZHIKODE: Kerala is the safest place for the minorities to live, according to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. “While other states did not consider Justice Sachar commission report, Kerala appointed the Paloli Muhammad Kutty committee in 2007 to act upon the report,” Mr Vijayan said during a meeting with Muslim leaders here on Saturday.

“It is under the recommendations of Paloli Muhammad Kutty committee that steps like the establishment of minority welfare board, scholarship scheme for Muslim girls and reservation for minorities who were out of the reservation strata were taken,” he said. The government had spent Rs 91 crore for the welfare of minority communities.

The fund allotted for the construction of houses for widows and divorcees was hiked from Rs 41 crore to Rs 58 crore. Steps were taken to give Rs 50,000 each to 1,000 families for repair and construction of houses, he said. A sum of Rs 2 crore was allotted for minority research centre and action was taken to start a pre-marital counselling centre. The Juvenile Justice Act implemented by the centre had created serious issues, he said and promised that the government had taken strict action to protect the institution here.

He allayed the apprehensions about leaving the appointments of Wakf Board to the Public Service Commission. “There will be reservations for direct appointments to Kerala Administrative Service but the reservation for government servants has to be considered. The decrease in the number of seats in higher education sector is also a serious matter which will be rectified,” he said.
