Devout take to green protocol at masjids during holy Ramzan

With the implementation of the protocol, plastic and non-biodegradables like disposable glasses, plates have been kept away from iftaars.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Most mosques in the city are strictly observing the green protocol for Iftaar as part of the initiative taken by district collector K. Vasuki and the city corporation. The collector along with the corporation authorities had requested the representatives of various masjids to observe green protocol ahead of the holy month of Ramzan. With the implementation of the protocol, plastic and non-biodegradables like disposable glasses, plates have been kept away from iftaars. Instead, they are using steel bowls, tumblers and glasses.

When asked about the initiative, Ansari, a member of the Muslim association Thampanoor Juma masjid said that for the past few years they had been using steel utensils to avoid plastic. “Not only within the Masjid, we promote green protocol among the devotees coming to offer prayers here,” he said.

Almost all the mosques in the city have responded to the green protocol positively. “We are serving Uluva kanji (Fenugreek porridge) in steel bowls for more than 1,500 devotees to break their fast this time. Apart from this, other refreshments like dry fruits and juice are also being served in steel utensils” said Abdul Salman, joint convener of Ramzan committee, Pallayam Juma Masjid.
