Thiruvananthapuram: The state reported five deaths due to infectious diseases. In a second death case this month in Thiruvananthapruam district, a 12-year-old boy succumbed to dengue at the medical college hospital here. The victim belonged to Vizhinjam. As many as 66 dengue cases were reported in Thiruvananthapuram district on Friday.
A death each due to H1N1 was reported from Kollam, Kasargod and Pathanamthitta. In Palakkad one person died of suspected leptospirosis. Several cases of fever were reported in different districts.
According to Kozhi-kode District Medical Officer, Dr Ashadevi, dengue has shown a spike in the district compared to last year. As many as 73,277 fever cases had been reported between January and May 18. Dengue has claimed three lives. H1N1 had also claimed three lives of the 43 cases. 1,526 cases of chickenpox were reported of which one had lost life. Leptospirosis had claimed four deaths of the 193 cases reported. 67 cases of leptospirosis were confirmed. Viral hepatitis claimed two of the 49 reported cases.
Meanwhile, six doctors of medical college Thiruvananthapuram were infected with dengue on Friday. The college authorities asked doctors to take precautionary steps during duty hours.
