Official lethargy putting lives of the unsung heroes of TSRTC at risk

Hyderabad: They brave the worst of climatic conditions and wade through the most deplorable roads in order to ensure that hundreds and thousands of commuters can have a safe journey on a daily basis. In summer their ‘working conditions’ are frighteningly worrisome and unhealthy as they have to survive the simmering heat for almost up to 10 hours.

Meet the over 17, 000 unsung heroes of the Telangana Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC), the drivers and conductors, who have no escape from the harsh summers when the temperatures soar over 40 degrees Celsius.

It is particularly harsh for drivers, who have to cover distances between 150 and 170 kilometers each day with fuming engines and hot winds for company.

For all the promises of keeping a regular stock and supply of ORS, buttermilk, lime juice or some fruit juice, the management is yet to comply thereby literally putting the drivers, and conductors, in the lurch.

They have urged the management on umpteen occasions to reschedule their working hours and trips, especially in April and May, so that they can get some relief.

V. Baba, a driver from Jeedimetla depot, said, “Forget the eight-hour assurance. We end up being at the wheel for 10 hours. It is almost like sitting on a furnace. Many drivers and conductors are falling ill because of this ordeal. We request the authorities to reduce the minimum hours to six hours per day as well as reduce the kilometres to be covered in summers.”

M Nageshwar Rao, former board member of the corporation, said, “I feel that in April and May, at least one special casual leave should be added for drivers and conductors. Apart from regular supply of 'beat the heat' supplements, there should be medical facilities, including doctors at major bus stations.”
Meanwhile, medical officer, Dr Mohammad Minhajuddin Khan said, “during summers drives will lose abnormal water from the body as also electrolytes, sodium chloride, potassium and sodium hydroxide. These lead to loss of energy and could lead to urinary infections, constipation, anal fistula, piles and anal fissure.”

Dr Minhajuddin, advises, “Fresh lime water with salt should be consumed at least four times a day. ORS is the best solution.”
