NDA to move Election Commission over election expenditure

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, he said a newspaper had demanded Rs 18 lakh for publishing case details in it.

Kochi: The NDA candidate in Chalakudy Lok Sabha seat, A. N. Radhakrishnan, said he will approach the election commission with a complaint on the additional expenditure incurred by a candidate for publishing cases against her/him in the media.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, he said a newspaper had demanded Rs 18 lakh for publishing case details in it. “If such an amount is spent for advertisements, the election expenditure of the candidate will go over the maximum permissible amount fixed by the commission,” he said.

The Supreme Court has ordered the candidates to provide detailed accounts of criminal cases pending against them in the media. Candidates contesting for Lok Sabha seats in the state have already started placing advertisements in media detailing cases pending against them. The candidate with the maximum number of cases in the state is K. Surendran contesting from Pathanamthitta.

According to the advertisement placed by him, he has 240 cases against him. The Supreme Court issued the order in the matter on September 9, 2018.
