Hailstones, rain lash Telangana, thunderstorms ahead

Crops damaged in Jagtial and Karimnagar districts.

Hyderabad: Hailstones and rain lashed the city and several districts over the past 24 hours, causing inundation of roads and power cuts in Hyderabad, and crop damage elsewhere in the state.

The city registered 5 cm rainfall, leading to temporary floods in colonies. This change in weather brought the temperature down by 10ºC, especially towards the evening on Friday.

Knee-deep water was reported in Narayanguda, Mehdipatnam, Khairatabad, Amberpet, and Putlibowli. Reports of inundation were received from 22 areas while 16 areas reported tree falls.

Many pockets faced power cuts, especially in Erramanzil, Banjara Hills, and Marredpally.

Hailstorms accompanied by high-intensity wind were reported from Siddipet, Sircilla, Karimnagar, and the districts surrounding Hyderabad.

The unseasonal flash rain and hailstorm were a result of an upper air cyclonic circulation 0.9 km above the sea level, the IMD said. The depression originated from Chhattisgarh and is moving to coastal Karnataka via Telangana.

The IMD has issued a thunderstorm warning for the state for the next four days and has forecasted heavy spells of rainfall in the evening. Hailstorms would also continue, it said. Hail is a common phenomenon during severe thunderstorms. Crop damage has been stated to be severe in Jagtial, Yadadri, and Karimnagar districts.

Paddy, mango and other crop faced the brunt of the weather. The civil supplies department has assured that it will buy the wet paddy to help farmers. Yadadri, Ghanpur, Yacharam, Khammam, Siddipet, and Huzurnagar received 6 cm rainfall.

In the city rain on Friday affected Metro Rail operations for about 30 minutes on the Ameerpet-Hitec City section after the power supply tripped.
