CH Vidyasagar Rao inaugurates tree plantation programme

He also appealed to the students to join hands in promoting green cover and make the planting of saplings into a mass movement.

CHENNAI: In an effort to prevent the effects of climate change and increase the groundwater level in Tamil Nadu, Governor CH.Vidyasagar Rao on Wednesday inaugurated a massive tree plantation programme. While inaugurating the programme Vidyasagar Rao said, “In order to promote green initiative, the universities and affiliated colleges have been asked to provide saplings to students. Students should plant and nurture them during their graduation period.”

He also appealed to the students to join hands in promoting green cover and make the planting of saplings into a mass movement. “We have seen the fury caused by cyclones like Vardah which uprooted thousands of trees. It becomes our duty to restore the green cover with the combined efforts of different communities,” he said. He further asked to get prepare to go in for massive tree plantation in the ensuing monsoon season. “This activity will help us to spread the green cover on a continuous basis across the state of Tamil Nadu.”

Governor Vidyasagar Rao also launched the coffee table book “Flora of Raj Bhavan, Chennai & Ooty” and the tree census plaque which contains information on the plant biodiversity in both the campuses. He also laid the foundation stone for 400 KW solar power plant in Raj Bhavan. Higher education minister K.P.Anbalagan, chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan and others participated in the function.
