Bengaluru: Cauvery water for 110 villages in 2 years
Bengaluru: Cauvery water, which was a distant dream for 110 villages that were brought under BBMP, is set to become a reality in the next two years, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah laying the foundation stone for the Rs 1,507-crore project on Wednesday.
Water saved from the BWSSB’s unaccounted for water (UFW) project will be supplied to these villages and over 12 lakh people will benefit from this project.
Laying the foundation stone, Mr Siddaramaiah said, "It is the duty of the government and the civic bodies to cater to the basic needs of the people. There was a plan to supply Cauvery water to 110 villages for last 10 years, but nothing had moved. After our government came to power, we took the initiative and have reserved budget for the project."
He requested the people to use water judiciously and to conserve the resource.
The BWSSB is aiming to complete the ambitious project in 24 months, a senior BWSSB official told Deccan Chronicle.
The unaccounted for water (UFW) in the city, because of broken pipes and unmetered lines, was 46 percent and it has been reduced to 42 percent after the project began. “By the time the project to supply water to the villages nears completion, the UFW percentage would have been brought down to 16 percent,” he said.
