Hyderabad: Formation of RWAs is contentious

The last date for receipt of applications has been extended to April 4.

Hyderabad: The issue of formation of ward committees and area sabhas in various GHMC divisions is leading to discord between residents welfare associations and TRS workers.

While RWAs want to head the committees, the corporators’ men stand to gain if the RWAs are not included. The committee will identify and propose and corporators will have to sanction budgets for the same. Earlier, these committees included henchmen of local representatives and residents had no role.

Mr G.V. Rao of Alwal RWA said, “Municipal administration minister Mr K.T. Rama Rao and GHMC commissioner Mr B. Janardhan had earlier announced that prominent social activists from each division would be made members, also, a senior citizen and a women representative. However, newly elected corporators are already filing names of their party workers. The same had happened in the earlier term.”

On Saturday, the United Federation of Resident Welfare Association met and took a decision that if there were more than 30 people applying for an area sabha or ward committee, there should be elections for the same; also, every committee should have a social activist, educationist and people with knowledge of engineering and planning.

The TS government on Friday meanwhile issued an order inviting applications for the co-option member of GHMC having special experience in municipal administration as permissible under the provision of Section 5 (1-b) of the GHMC Act, 1955 . The last date for receipt of applications has been extended to April 4. Persons nominated as members of ward committees or representatives of the area sabha in the corporation for a period not less than three years.

Those who have rendered their service as social workers or volunteers of reputed NGOs, who have contributed service for a period of not less than five years in the corporation area are eligible. One can apply to the GHMC commissioner, Tank bund before the dead line.
