Cops going easy on helmet rule drive

The traffic cops' drive seems to be losing steam in the city.

Hyderabad: Despite advice from traffic and transport experts that a strict enforcement of helmet rule for a long period is the best way to make it a success, the traffic cops’ drive seems to be losing steam in the city.

In less than three weeks after the special drive against helmet rule violation was launched, the booking of cases by traffic cops has come down. Even the cases registered with the Hyderabad traffic police reveal that the drive against helmet rule has slowed down considerably.

The number of cases booked in the third week of the drive is just 28,220 compared to 66,006 in the second week. Transport expert Prof. P.R. Bhanumurthy of JNTU said the police should intensify its drive against helmet rule violation or the effort made so far would go waste. “It will send a wrong message to bikers.” However, DCP A.V. Ranganath said the drive against helmet rule violation would continue.
