Chennai youth attempts suicide unable to bear SI's demand for bribe

The autorickshaw driver claimed he had already given the money.

Chennai: A 22-year old man tried to commit suicide after a traffic sub-inspector was allegedly demanding more money from him to drop action in an accident case.

Police said V. Ranjith, son of autorickshaw driver Veeramani of Nehru Nagar, Velachery, made a noose on Friday and was saved by his alert sister who raised an alarm. Neighbours rescued him and admitted him to a private hospital.
In his complaint with Guindy police, Veeramani, said his son, who worked in a vegetable shop, hit a pedestrian near Tambaram in December last.

Though the victim was treated and discharged, Saravana Bhaskar, a sub-inspector, attached to Tambaram traffic investigation wing, was demanding an illegal gratification of Rs 5,000 for not registering an FIR. The autorickshaw driver claimed he had already given the money and the official allegedly kept calling his son asking for more money. His son was upset for the past few days, the complainant said. A community service register receipt had been issued and further investigation is on.
