Vijayawada: Auspicious time for Hindu marriages

He said that Magha masam is auspicious to perform weddings, upana-yanam, house warming and other events.

Vijayawada: There is a mad rush for weddings due to the availability of auspicious muhurtams.

According to the priests, auspicious muhurtams are available from February 20 to 24 and February 28. Further, auspicious muhurtams are available on March 9, 13, 14, 23 and 24, hence people are performing the weddings of their children during the good days. Function halls, kalyana mandapams and hotels are booked and several parents have decided to perform the weddings of their children on the streets outside their houses due to unavailability of accommodation.

According to reports, nearly one lakh weddings will be performed in the 13 districts of AP as also house warming and other programmes, in the good muhurtams. This is giving good business to travel agencies, decorators, event managers, orchestras, hotels and other trades.

Interestingly there is a huge demand for priests in this wedding season with priests performing two to four weddings per day.

Most functions halls and kalyana mandapams in Vijayawada, Guntur, Machilipatnam, Eluru, Ongole and other cities and towns of AP are booked in advance, said B. Venkat, manager of a reputed function hall at Vijayawada.

He said that the Magha masam of the Telugu calendar is presently running and it is treated as auspicious to perform weddings.

Hindu purohit P. Gowri Sankar said that Magham is a Sanskrit word which means no presence of sin, evil, suffering and grief and highly meritorious, auspicious and free from any sin.

Event organiser S. Madhava Rao said that most weddings are scheduled for this February and March. He said that earlier people used to perform weddings during the summer due to the availability of summer holidays, but now prefer winter.
