Chennai international airport staffer held for stealing cargo

The complainant stated that cargo shipment was offloaded and was sent to a warehouse on a truck.

Chennai: A 23-year-old airport employee was arrested for allegedly stealing mobile phones from a cargo shipment at Chennai international airport, police said on Tuesday.

The Police have launched a search for a 25-year-old associate of the employee.

According to the police, early this month, a case was registered regarding the theft of a consignment of mobile phones from a cargo shipment.

The complainant stated that cargo shipment was offloaded and was sent to a warehouse on a truck.

But at the time of unloading the cargo in the warehouse, it was found that many mobile phones from the cargo parcel were missing and it was suspected that it had been stolen while unloading the shipment, police said.

According to police, all areas in the airport and other stations were searched but the shipment could not be found. CCTV footage was also scanned but no clue could be found.

On the basis of technical analysis of stolen mobile phones, Police raised suspicion on Karthick, 23, from Meenambakkam who worked as load man in the cargo section.

Police raided his house and seized twelve high-end mobile phones.

He confessed to his involvement in the crime and also said his friend has 20 mobile phones which were stolen from the cargo.

Karthick was arrested and remanded under judicial custody and police have launched a search for the 25-year-old associate of Karthick. Further investigations are on.
