Underqualified MG University V-C Dr Babu Sebastian loses post

He ceases to be the VC now, but he can appeal against the verdict in Supreme Court.

Kottayam: Kerala High Court on Monday cancelled the appointment of MG University vice-chancellor Dr Babu Sebastian for the lack of administrative experience after three and half years in office.

A division bench of Chief Justice Antony Dominic and Justice Dama Seshadri Naidu said the post of the director of the SIET he had held “does not equal to a university professor.”

The court maintained that the composition of the committee for the VC's selection was also flawed and a member of the Senate or Syndicate should not be on it.

"One of the members of the selection committee, Benny Behanan MLA, possesses no eminence in the sphere of higher education,” the judgement says.

“As a result, the writ of quo warranto is issued declaring that Dr Sebastian is unqualified to hold the position of the vice-chancellor."

He ceases to be the VC now, but he can appeal against the verdict in Supreme Court.

Dr Sebastian is the second MG University VC to be disqualified after his predecessor Dr A.V. George whom the Governor ousted in May 2014 for misrepresentation in his CV.

Kottayam: According to the UGC Act, only a university professor of ten years or one possessing the administrative experience equivalent to that of a professor is qualified for VC. Responding to the verdict, Dr Sebastian said he would do whatever legally possible.
