IPS officer's family, cops rubbish suicide theory

According to his family, Harish was engaged to a girl from his relatives' circle on Nov 8 last and the marriage had been fixed for Mar 21.

Chennai: The family of IPS officer, N. Harish, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the police officers mess at Egmore here on Thursday, said he could have died only due to cardiac arrest.

A senior police officer, quoting a doctor who was part of the team that conducted post-mortem on the body, too asserted that Harish died of cardiac arrest.

Harish’s father Nagaraj who was here to receive the body from Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital told reporters there was no pressure on Harish from senior police officers. Asked whether Harish was upset over the delay in promotion, Nagaraj said his son was initially upset over the delay. “He was eagerly awaiting his promotion. Harish, in fact, had passed the regional language examination”, he said.

According to his family, Harish was engaged to a girl from his relatives’ circle on November 8 last and the marriage had been fixed for March 21. The family, busy with wedding shopping, was shattered to learn about the untimely demise of Harish. He was happy and was planning to come to Karnataka later this month for the wedding preparations. His father last saw Harish on Tuesday. The autopsy was performed on Friday by a five-member-team.

The entire process lasted 90 minutes and it was also recorded. The body was then taken to Harish’s village Gerupura in Kolar district of Karnataka, where it will be laid to rest.

“We have not received any preliminary report on the post-mortem. However, the doctors indicated that Harish could have died only of a heart attack”, said a senior police officer.

Police top brass, including DGP Ashok Kumar and Chennai commissioner T.K. Rajendran were among those who paid their respects to the deceased.
