Information TVs at Chennai airport to be restored soon

Delay is inevitable, says airport director.

Chennai: Visitors and passengers at Chennai airport will continue to be deprived of information about flight status as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will take another week to restore all TV screens which were removed more than a week ago.

Speaking to DC, Chennai airport director, Deepak Shahstri, said this delay is inevitable and passengers have to adjust with it as there are certain procedures before the television sets are installed. One of the televisions again had a mounting problem. “Some complaints have come, but it is better to be perfect than make an ad hoc arrangement. Procurement is a very difficult process in government and we have to follow the formalities”, he said.

Adding that he is for a permanent solution to this problem Shastri added “All of them are not faulty and this is more of a precautionary measure. Three weeks is long time but there are procedural limits – we have to make the claim from the company and enquire as to why such a problem occurred”

Commenting on the situation, president of Air Passengers Association, Sudhakar Reddy said, “This shows the deplorable state of maintenance of the airport. Such a small issue is taking so much time to sort out and it is always the passengers who suffer at Chennai airport”

It maybe recalled that the AAI had removed four TV screens outside the gates after one of the screens collapsed in the terminal.

N. Harish, who had come to receive his father from Bangalore, said, “ I came to the airport last week and my flight was delayed. However, my driver could not know that because no information was available and he kept waiting. Now, this week, I have to face the same problem.”

He had never come across such a problem in other international airports in the country, he said.
