People come forward to ‘adopt’ wildlife for cash
HYDERABAD: Adoption of animals in Nehru Zoological Park has started picking up with people loosening their purse strings and coming forward to fund the care of animals in the zoo.
Zoo officials say 28 animals of the zoo have been adopted until December 2019. The adopters include individual animal lovers and those from the corporate world.
Such is the love for adopting animals that two rhinos were adopted, one by Shantanu Alone from Pune and the other by retired animal husbandry department assistant director Khurshid Tahseen.
These two have been the first to adopt animals of the Nehru Zoological Park in 2020. Officials say close to `37 lakh have been raised through adoptions. The amount would be used to purchase feed and improve shelters housing the animals.
The list of animals adopted includes tigers, chimpanzees, tortoises, snakes, giraffe, rhinos, ostriches, and peacocks, both albino and regular. “The people who have adopted these animals are very compassionate. They visit the zoo regularly to see how the animals they have adopted are doing. It is not just that they give the money and walk away,” an official remarked.
