No amenities, Kanakapura road residents form human chain
Bengaluru: Kanakapura Road Apartments Movement of Change (KARAMOC) formed a human chain to protest against the lack of the implementation of civic amenities, including the blatant traffic violations on Kanakapura road.
Over 1,000 residents on either side on Kanakapura road at Sarakki signal turned for the protest with a string of demands from the public representatives and administrative department.
“It is very sad that we have to come out on the road and protest for some basic amenities like this. The callous attitude of authorities especially BBMP and elected representatives has led us to this stage. We hope quick action on this before anyone dies while walking footpath or crossing the road,” said Aleem, a member of KARAMOC.
The residents had sent letters to the local corporator, BBMP Mayor, BBMP Commissioner, Jayanagar traffic inspector and K.S. Layout Traffic inspector, but no action has been taken.
One of the demands is to install bollards where ramps are located on the footpath since the walkways are either used to park vehicles or used by bikers to jump traffic signals. This endangers the life of pedestrians, especially senior citizens.
“We want the BBMP to fix all the broken footpaths and also make way for pedestrians wherever it is not available,” one of the residents said.
In a letter addressed to the BBMP Mayor Gagambike, the residents in one voice demanded that bollards be placed in such a manner that there is not an inch of space of left for vehicles to pass.
The placards also demanded the deployment of marshals to prevent garbage dumping.
The Sarakki junction gets busy at early morning itself and the pedestrians only get 10 seconds to cross the junction. The residents said the contractor did not install pedestrian signal and hence it is imperative that the junction has pelican switches.
