Kerala University defers entrance for PhD in management

Only teachers of universities are allowed to guide those using the facilities of the centre.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala University has put on hold the entrance examinations for PhD in management though it holds entrance tests for PhD in all other subjects regularly.

The university has also refused to sanction guideships to the faculty of various institutions due to lack of sufficient facilities to accommodate more guides in management. The reference facility in management is limited to Kerala University Library and Institute of Management in Kerala. The Institute of Management in Keralaunder the univeristy established in 1991 provides Masters as well as doctoral programmes in business management. Only teachers of universities are allowed to guide those using the facilities of the centre.

The Institute of Management in Government (IMG) is the only other centre with recognition for research. For some technical reasons, IMG does not give its facility for researchers, said sources.

As a result, there is a shortage of guides in management though there are over 100 students eligible to do PhD, who have difficulty in finding a guide.
For doing PhD, one should either pass the NET, the entrance examination of the university or complete MPhil.

One reason for the shortage of guides is the new stipulation that retired teachers or those who are to retire within three years should not become guides. One guide can only supervise eight research scholars at a time, sources said.
