Jacobite, Orthodox factions reach truce on church

The Mass will be held in a nearby chapel of the Jacobites until the court order is out.

Thrissur: The warring Jacobite and Orthodox Church factions reached a truce on the administration of St Mary's church at Mannamangalam on Saturday.

The church will remain closed and both the factions will keep away from it and its premises.

They will await the orders of the High Court on the plea of the Jacobites to stay the Ernakulam district court's order to hand over the church to the Orthodox faction.

The Jacobites, who are presently keeping the key of the church, held consultations with collector T.V. Anupama on Saturday and sought permission for Sunday Mass, but the request was rejected.

The Mass will be held in a nearby chapel of the Jacobites until the court order is out.

"The court order in favour of the Orthodox faction to take over the church came in November. Since December 19, we had been talking to the collector and the top cops in the district over implementation of the order. But the cops were of the opinion that they could not intervene as they were not a party in the case.

They wanted us to file a case in the court citing that the police were not implementing the court order," Mr Jiju P. Varghese, managing committee member of the Malankara Orthodox Church, said.
