Chennai: ICF to produce manure from organic waste
CHENNAI: Integral Coach Factory, Perambur, manufacturing rail coaches for Indian Railway, is all set to produce fertilizers from organic wastes generated in ICF colony.
The new integrated waste management system was inaugurated by Ashwani Lohani, chairman, Railway board on Friday.
According to an ICF official, ICF conservancy workers would engage in the door-to-door collection of wastes.
“There are nearly 3,500 houses in ICF colony, which produce garbage about 8 tonnes everyday. Of which, more than 90 per cent is the organic waste. We will segregate the organic waste and convert them into organic fertilizer,” the official added.
According to the official, the new integrated waste management system consists of 15 composite pits, in which organic wastes are to be dumped.
“It will take 45 to 60 days to produce manure and this is the first attempt among the railway colonies across the country,” the official added.
ICF has planned to utilise the manure for 10,000 plant saplings that are to be planted in various parts of the colony, the official said.
Ashwani Lohani also inaugurated a new paint booth, modern high-rise rack and pallet system among other new facilities. He also flagged off the last ICF designed passenger coach.
“Hereafter, the ICF would only manufacture Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches. The LHB coaches are light weighted and suitable for high-speed operations,” another official explained.
