Kolkata: Two BJP MPs from North Bengal — Khagen Murmu, an MP of Malda North and Nishith Pramanik of Cooch-behar, were arrested by the state police on Wednesday for visiting two violence-hit railway stations without permission.
Bhaluka and Harishchandrapur in Malda were among the many railway stations in the state which came under attack by mob protesting against the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens since December 13.
When Murmu and Pramanik were going to visit the Bhaluka station, the cops stopped them on the way and asked if they had permission. The two BJP MPs then started demonstrating sitting on the road. The cops arrested them and took them away to the English Bazar police station. They were, however, granted conditional bail later.
Noting huge loss to public properties due to vandalism, Murmu later alleged that they sought permission from the district magistrate and superintendent of police but didn’t get it.
Meanwhile, no major incidents of violence were reported from the districts on Wednesday as West Bengal limped back to normalcy, with internet services restored in some areas, officials said.
