Most dementia cases will be from India, China by 2050'

A session at the symposium covered “Lifestyle/Behavioral Interventions around the World”.

Bengaluru: “The maximum number of new dementia cases will come from India and China, and the number of elderly people in India will increase from 143 million to 300 million by 2050,” said Ms Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath, Director, Centre for Brain Research in the fourth Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC), held here on Tuesday.

Researchers from around the world gathered in the city to discuss effective prevention, treatment and cure for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. The two-day AAIC Satellite Symposium drew more than 300 researchers, clinicians and students to hear experts from India, other parts of Asia, the US, the UK and Europe. The conference aims to connect researchers for scientific collaboration and data sharing that can move the field closer to breakthroughs in Alzheimer's science.

Maria C. Carrillo, chief science officer, Alzheimer's Association, said, “We want to bring researchers together for collaborations with scientists in other parts of the world to advance our shared goals of developing better diagnosis, treatments and prevention for Alzheimer's.”

A session at the symposium covered “Lifestyle/Behavioral Interventions around the World”. While other sessions included information about improvements in diagnosing and assessing individuals with cognitive decline, and a report on prevalence of Alzheimer's and dementia across the country.

According to the 2018 World Alzheimer Report, there are 50 million people in the world with dementia, and every three seconds someone in the world develops dementia which is the seventh leading cause of death worldwide.
