Telangana: Centre allots institutions but not funds
Hyderabad: The Central Government, liberal in sanctioning institutions to AP, was not providing sufficient funds, going by the allotments. In three and half years, the Centre sanctioned 38 institutions of which 19 were part of the AP Reorganisation Act and the rest on the request of the State Government. The establishments would need around Rs 12,000 crore. The State Government allotted land and funds for compound wall construction. Yet paucity of funds resulted in the institutions functioning from temporary offices.
A senior officer said staff and students were facing many problems in these temporary structures. Once they started functioning at full fledged levels the face of AP would change, he added. While the State Government allotted land and some funds for the institutions to function, the Centre was yet to keep its promise, he said, pointing to a few cases. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Tirupati was sanctioned in 2015 and the foundation stone laid in March that year itself on the 630.49 acres allocated by the State Government. It also sanctioned Rs 8.3 crore for the construction of the compound wall. Yet, it began functioning on temporary campus from 2015-16.
Another case in point was the National Institute of Technology, also sanctioned in 2015 and foundation stone laid in August that year at Tadepalligudem in West Godavari. The State Government allotted 172.08 acres and Rs 7.3 crore for the compound wall. Like the IIT, it still was functioning on a temporary campus.
Others facing similar situations were the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) at Visakhapatnam, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) at Tirupati, Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy in Visakhapatnam. In all these cases the State Government did its part and was not in a position to provide funds for campus construction, it was pointed out.
