Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit reviews Swachh Bharat progress in Salem
Salem: Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Monday took his review meetings to Salem, the home district of Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, by inspecting bus terminus and other public places to check the progress of Swachh Bharat.
Purohit, who was here to participate in a seminar organised by the Salem Periyar University, created awareness among the public about Clean India, a pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and distributed pamphlets on ways to keep places of public importance and neighbourhood clean.
His visit came even as Opposition political parties raised a hue and cry over him inspecting public places and holding review meetings with officials. These parties say Governor was exceeding his brief and interfering in the functioning of an elected government.
Visiting Thindamangalam village, Purohit inaugurated a photo exhibition on Swachh Bharat programmee and flagged off a rally aimed at creating awareness on the ill effects of open defecation. He also interacted with the beneficiaries of construction of toilet scheme of the Union Government.
The Governor has been reviewing progress of Swachh Bharat scheme in districts that he visits for participating in programmees. Though he reviewed progress of other projects in Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Cuddalore, he refrained from holding a “proper” review meeting in Salem.
Later, he also visited the Salem bus terminus where he interacted with passengers and distributed pamphlets on the Swachh Bharat scheme and ways to keep the environment clean. He also made a few passengers read the do’s and don’ts printed on the pamphlets aloud for the benefit of other passengers as they were in Tamil.
Purohit had on Saturday reiterated that he would continue to interact with the common people and officials during his visits to various districts in the coming months.
The Raj Bhavan, in its release, rubbished the allegation that the governor was “interfering at the behest of the Centre (in administration)”. “This is a bald allegation unsupported by any facts. This allegation deserves to be ignored,” the Raj Bhawan statement had said on Saturday.
