Chennai: Transport department bans additional fittings on cars

The action was taken after the ministry of road and transport issued a circular to all the state ministries.

CHENNAI: In a move to reduce road accidents, the state transport department has banned the installation of additional fittings like crash guards and bull bars on cars and sports utility vehicles (SUVs) on Monday. The action was taken after the ministry of road and transport issued a circular to all the state ministries.

According to section 52 of the Motor Vehicles Act, “No owner of a motor vehicle shall so alter the vehicle that the particulars contained in the certificate of registration are at variance with those originally specified by the manufacturer”, which literally translates to a motorist committing an illegal act when he fits an additional fitment.

According to experts, bull bars might interfere with the airbags in case of an accident as they can interfere with the sensors. Moreover, they damage chassis of both the cars during a collision. The fittings also pose a serious threat to pedestrians and two-wheelers.
