Telangana to help Niti formulate AI norms

Niti Aayog has identified two AI research areas towards which it will establish separate centres.

Hyderabad: In a significant development, Telangana government might soon be associated with Niti Aayog in formulating guidelines on artificial intelligence.

Niti Aayog has identified two AI research areas towards which it will establish separate centres.

The first one will focus on core research and be academic in nature while the second centre will focus on applied research (transformational AI).

Rama Devi Lanka, director of the State Government’s Emerging Technologies wing, said, “We have volunteered to help Niti Aayog. Once the Centre approves the budget for these centres, Niti will fund academic institutes that will conduct the research. To identify these institutions, it will need some guidelines.”

Rama Devi clarified that these proposals were still in the initial stages and nothing has been formalised yet. “They had approached us for collaboration. Both parties have agreed, but work hasn’t started yet,” she added.

It may be noted that the Telangana government was the first state government to sign a statement of intent with Niti Aayog for collaboration in frontier technologies.
