Salem: Couple seeks retrieval of infant sold off for Rs 3 lakh

They were a committed couple who took their relationship seriously and made a living working in a hosiery unit in Tirupur.

Salem: An inter-caste marriage couple from Aatayampatti near Salem on Monday petitioned the district collector to take steps to “retrieve” their four-month-old baby boy, who they alleged had been “sold off” to a childless couple by, unfortunately, none other than the girl’s parents.

Raja and his wife Meena in their petition on the weekly grievances day here said they had fallen in love and married two years ago despite opposition from parents on both sides.

They were a committed couple who took their relationship seriously and made a living working in a hosiery unit in Tirupur.

Meena had recently given birth to a baby boy and as she was unwell after the delivery she had left the infant at the care of her parents.

After she got well, she requested her parents to return the child to her, but was shocked to learn from her parents that they had left the child to the care of another person.

Meanwhile, the couple said in their petition that they heard that two months ago, Meena’s parents had allegedly “sold” the baby boy to a childless person in Chennai, for a sum of Rs 3 lakh. They urged the Salem district collector to get at the truth of this information and retrieve the baby boy to them.
