Prosecutor in Wayalar case sacked

The post mortem examination report had revealed violent sexual assault on the victims.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: More than three weeks after the acquittal of all accused in the Walayar sisters death case, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday ordered the removal of Special Public Prosecutor, Latha Jayaraj, for inefficiently handling the case.

The Chief Minister made the announcement in Assembly amid allegations from the Opposition that the government had failed to provide justice to the victims. Angry protests were witnessed across the state demanding justice for the 13 year old and 9 year old dalit sisters who were found dead under suspicious circumstances in their one room shed in Walayar on January 13, 2017 and March 4, 2017 respectively. The post mortem examination report had revealed violent sexual assault on the victims.

Pinarayi told Assembly that the government viewed the lapses in investigations seriously, particularly the lapses of police which would be looked into in detail. The officials who are found to have committed lapses would face stringent action.
