Chennai: Debt-ridden bizman tries to break open ATM, held

The man had broken into the ATM kiosk and attempted to break open the vault with a hammer and screwdriver.

Chennai: The city police arrested a 30-year old businessman after he attempted to break an ATM kiosk in J.J.Nagar in the wee hours of Monday. The arrested was identified as Silambarasan (30) of Krishna Nagar in Nedunkundram. He was caught by the J.J Nagar police after he attempted to open an Andhra Bank ATM machine in TNEB Office road in J.J Nagar.

The man had broken into the ATM kiosk and attempted to break open the vault with a hammer and screwdriver. Security teams in Hyderabad who were remotely monitoring the bank and the ATM through CCTV cameras triggered the alarm and alerted the Chennai city police control room, who in turn alerted the J.J Nagar police.

A patrol team rushed to the spot and found a masked man attempting to open the ATM. He was caught red-handed and during interrogation, he disclosed he had been planning to rob the ATM for more than a month. The theft was his way of making up for money lost in business.

Police said Silambarasan is a diploma graduate and owns a rice mandi in Nedunkundram. Since he had incurred a huge loss and ran up a debt of Rs 6 lakh, he attempted to crack the ATM.

He was obviously not aware that the ATM was being monitored in the bank’s head office in Hyderabad.
