Why continue with Vice-Chancellor, Hyderabad High Court asks SVIMS

Counsel urged the court to direct the respondent to show his eligibility to hold the post.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court has asked the AP government and the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences to spell out their stand in continuing with Dr Tanjavur S. Ravi Kumar as the director cum Vice-Chancellor of Svims though he is ineligible for the post as per provisions of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2015.

Justice Raja Elango, while hearing a quo warranto petition by Md. Ahmed Khan, a resident of the city, challenging the appointment of Dr Ravi Kumar as the director/ Vice-Chancellor of Svims and continuing with him in the post for over a year now, issued notices to the respondents.

Counsel for the petitioner said that the respondent director was ineligible for the post as per the provisions of the Citizenship Amendment) Act, 2015 and his continuation as such was contrary to Section 17(5) of the Sri Venkateswara University Act, 1995.

Counsel urged the court to direct the respondent to show his eligibility to hold the post.

He also urged the court to direct the AP government and the Svims to recover whatever the amount paid to the respondent director towards emoluments while holding the said office. While issuing the notices, the judge granted two weeks to the respondents to file their affidavits.
