Thiruvananthapuram: Food poisoning at CET, college closed till Sunday

The students of both the ladies' and men's hostels were vacated from the hostel before 9 a.m on Wednesday.

Thiruvananthapuram: College of Engineering, Trivandrum, has been closed till Sunday following food poisoning at the ladies hostel.

Principal J David issued the directive to close down the college temporarily following the report of the assistant medical officer attached to the ladies hostel.

The students of both the ladies' and men’s hostels were vacated from the hostel before 9 a.m on Wednesday. The classes scheduled for Thursday and Friday have been suspended.

Though, the food poisoning occurred on Tuesday, the students were given time to vacate the hostels to ensure that they were not stranded as many of the students staying there were from outside the district. According to sources, the food poisoning occurred in the mess of the ladies hostel. Though, around 40 girls were admitted to Government hospital, Pangappara, many of them were discharged after preliminary treatment. None of them was serious.

The incident occurred when students who consumed food from the hostel reported uneasiness, dizziness, vomiting and stomachache. The officials of the health department have seized the remains of the biriyani served the previous day and sent it to the laboratory for testing. Sreekariyam police have registered a case.
