Polavaram: Car falls in canal; family escapes unhurt
Rajahmundry: Five members of a family including a doctor couple, their son and two adults, had a miraculous escape after their car plunged into a canal at Polavaram in West Godavari on Wednesday.
According to Polavaram police, Dr Saikommu Suresh, working as an assistant professor at a private dental college at Bhimavaram, wife Dr Himabindhu, son Aditya, her father Somaiah and her mother Vijayamma were going to Papikondalu. About 100 metres from their destination, the driver lost control of the car while avoiding hitting a vehicle and buffalo. The vehicle swerved into the canal of Kademma Outfall Sluice and the car fell into the water.
The passengers started screaming for help. Police personnel on duty came to their rescue. The airbags of the car opened avoiding major injury.
The police rescued them and shifted them to safety. They sustained minor injuries under the impact of the fall but the car was badly damaged.
The injured were shifted to government hospital at Polavaram for medical treatment and after getting first-aid, the family members went back to their home town. Police booked a case and an investigation is on.
