Hyderabad: No amount of compensation is worth my parents’ life, but people must know their rights, said Mr L. Murali Krishna whose parents lost their life when gas leaking from a faulty cylinder exploded in 2014. The techie, who has moved to Hyderabad, recalls the pain and anguish he underwent after the incident.
“The companies kept stating that my parents mishandled the cylinder, they did not accept that there was a fault wth the cylinder or that the technician had made a technician,” Mr Krishna said.
Lawyers say many victims of gas leakage mishaps are unaware of the norm that gas companies are liable to compensate them for their loss under a special scheme. All LPG consumers are covered for any mishap that occurs due to the cylinder at their registered address.
“There is a public liability insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh but claims can be made for more. The company and the agency can hold the liable separately as well,” said advocate V. Gowrishankar.
In Mr Krishna’s case, he had received the insurance but they pressed their claim for more compensation because they had informed the company about the defect in the cylinder in advance.
“Consumers wouldn”t know but every registered address will be noted with the insurance agency and accidents happening there will be covered,” the advocate V. Gowrishankar added....
