Gold, silver sales down by 5 per cent this Diwali

People now prefer to purchase when gold prices fall or for special occasions.

Hyderabad: The sales of gold and silver on Dhanteras had dipped by 4-5 per cent over last year, according to the jewellers association. It said the fall was caused by impulsive purchase at other times.

Mr Purshotam Agarwal, vice-president of the Twin Cities Gems and Jewellers Association, said, “People wait for festivals to buy gold, the trend of impulsive purchases is stronger. People now prefer to purchase when gold prices fall or for special occasions. Over the last half a decade, festival sales have gone down by 4 to 5 per cent annually.”

Over the last few weeks, there has not been any significant difference in gold prices. Gold sold at Rs 3,075 per gram on Wednesday, and the difference over the past week has been between Rs10 and Rs 20.
