T Thomasto discuss water crisis issue with KWA
Thiruvananthapuram: Water Resources Minister Mathew T. Thomas will hold a meeting with KWA officials to understand what led to the severe drinking water shortage here, according to sources.
Though Mayor V.K. Prasanth had then said that the issue will be resolved within two days, areas like Devaswom Board junction continues to face problems. Nanthancode councillor Palayam Rajan said, “The issue has been resolved to a great deal with a special team assigned to identify leakages. Devaswom Board junction is one of the worst affected areas.”
The drinking water shortage in various city wards is fast being resolved, according to Corporation officials. Taps were running dry in Sasthamangalam, Vazhuthacaud, Thycaud, Palayam, Kowdiar and Nanthancode, when a meeting was convened at the Corporation. A special technical team was formed to urgently address the issue. “The team was able to address some of the major leakages in the city,” said a Corporation official.
For a long time, the city has been facing drinking water problems with KWA taking years to replace the decades’ old ‘Premo’ pipes. The exercise had started in 2014, but there was a break before it began in full swing in 2015, according to an official. Stretch after stretch, KWA has been replacing the pipes. Ambalamukku-Muttada-Paruthipara and Peroorkada-Sasthamangalam stretches have ductile iron pipes now. Instead of replacing the Pattom-Murinjapalam-Medical College pipe, distribution lines are being connected to an existing JICA line.
