Must sow seeds to preserve heritage education: expert

The workshop was the brainchild of heritage activist Juhee Ahmed.

Hyderabad: “One needs to sow seeds of heritage through education in children’s mind in order to preserve the history for tomorrow,” says Mr Feizal Alkazi, a Heritage Education expert and master trainer in a lecture he gave on “Preserving the past for tomorrow: Exploring Heritage Education in India.” The workshop was the brainchild of heritage activist Juhee Ahmed.

By enlightening about his major projects on heritage education throughout the country in major cities like Srinagar, Jaipur, Delhi and his hometown Mumbai, he gave a route map for many heritage enthusiasts on how to pass on their interests to next generations in an engaging way.

“Children don’t want to know everything that happened in every empire in the country, they want to know things which are interesting and that should be taught them in an engaging manner,” he said. His methods of teaching focuses mainly on workshops. He believes that children should experience things directly with their own eyes as it helps them to come up with their own thoughts.

Mr. Faizal also cites a few interesting activities which children can be given about heritage, like, locating the city map, tracing family history, observing a structure and drawing them.

In his latest workshop which was conducted in Vidyaranya school on Tuesday, he had asked children to come up with interesting recipes for heritage and what is the color and odour of heritage to them.
