MLA Raju Abraham seeks steps to improve rain prediction

He also stressed the need for modernising the fire force.

Thiruvananthapuram: Ranni MLA Raju Abraham has demanded effective steps to improve the climate warning system in view of the recent flo-ods. “At present, there is no system for accurate warning on landslides. As far as I know, this is the situation throughout the world. However, there are warning systems against most other natural calamities, including volcanic eruptions,” he told reporters at the Press Club here on Tuesday.

“There is also resistance by the Indian Meteorol-ogical Department agaist states establishing climate warning systems. The warning by IMD is not up to the mark. Though Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh had taken steps to establish their own climate warning systems, the IMD did not give sanction for the same,” he said.

He also stressed the need for modernising the fire force. They should have a helicopter and boats for rescue operations. At present they have only inflatable rubber boats, he said.

“I have my own opinion about the functioning of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, but I do not want to make it public to avoid a controversy,” he said when asked whether there was need to reconstitute it.
